Explanation
of those who sleep and take their ease in the midst of great peril. For when a certain merchant had filled his ship with salt and was sleeping, the bilge-water rose and dissolved his salt. Whence the proverb.

Ἅλας ἄγων καθεύδεις
Explanation
ἐπὶ τῶν ἐν μεγάλῳ κινδύνῳ καθευδόντων καὶ ῥᾳστωνευομένων. Ἐμπόρου γάρ τινος τὴν ναῦν ἁλῶν πληρώσαντος καὶ καθεύδοντος, τὴν ἀντλίαν ἐπαναβῆναι συνέβη καὶ ἐκτῆξαι τοὺς ἅλας. Ὅθεν ἡ παροιμία.
