For Pluto, having fallen in love with Persephone, carried her off in secret. Demeter, with torches by night and day, went all over the earth searching for her. Learning from the Hermioneans that Pluto had carried her off, in anger at the gods she abandoned heaven, and in the likeness of a woman came to Eleusis; there she sat upon the rock that was thereafter called "Mirthless" (Agelastos).
