An Attic neighbour

Explanation

Duris says of it that, since the Athenians cast out those who dwelt round about and bordered them, the proverb gained currency. Craterus says the proverb was used of the colonists sent from Athens to Samos: for the Attics being summoned to Samos and settling there drove out the natives.

Ἀττικὸς πάροικος

Explanation

Δοῦρις [καὶ] περὶ αὐτῆς λέγει, ὅτι ἐπειδὴ Ἀθηναῖοι τοὺς περιοικοῦντας αὐτοῖς καὶ γειτνιῶντας ἐξέβαλον, ἡ παροιμία ἐκράτησε. Κρατερὸς δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν εἰς Σάμον πεμφθέντων Ἀθήνηθεν ἐποίκων τὴν παροιμίαν εἰρῆσθαι. Ἀττικοὶ γὰρ μεταπεμφθέντες εἰς Σάμον κἀκεῖ κατοικήσαντες τοὺς ἐγχωρίους ἐξέωσαν.
