The horn of Amaltheia

Explanation

this proverb is like "the heavenly goat," and is said for the following reason. Rhea, having borne Zeus in Crete, gave him to be reared by the Nymphs Adrasteia and Ide, daughters of Melisseus. They reared the child on the milk of the goat Amaltheia. When Zeus had grown up, he set the goat among the stars (whence she is called "the heavenly goat"), and gave one of her horns to the Nymphs as a thank-offering, granting it the power that whatever the Nymphs wished should gush forth from it for them. Achelous later got it and gave it to Heracles in ransom, when Heracles had broken off one of his horns, when they fought over the marriage of Deianira. The proverb, then, is said of those who furnish to others abundant means of becoming wealthy; since the man who held Amaltheia's horn took, ungrudgingly, whatever he wished.
