Off to Macaria with you!

Explanation

some take it as a euphemism, in place of, "Off to misery with you" — for they figure Macaria as a place in Hades. But others say Macaria was a daughter of Heracles, and that, in accordance with an oracle, she gave herself to a voluntary death at the time of Eurystheus' march on Athens. After the death of Heracles, Eurystheus pursued his sons, and the Heraclidae fled to the altar of Pity; the Athenians, refusing to give them up, took up war against Eurystheus. An oracle was given that they would be released from Eurystheus' onslaught if one of the Heraclidae gave himself up to a willing death; Macaria gave herself to death; and the Athenians, joining battle, defeated Eurystheus. Many fell, and Hyllus son of Heracles slew Eurystheus and brought his head to Alcmene, who gouged out his eyes with weaving-pins. The Athenians, then, honouring Macaria's tomb with flowers and garlands, used to say, "Off to Macaria!" At first, then, the proverb was used of those who give themselves to death for virtue's sake, but later, by abuse, of any sending-off whatsoever.
