The risk on a Carian
Explanation
of those making trial on cheap men. The Carians were the first to serve as mercenaries. Others set the proverb against the easily-despised: for they say the Carians were the first of men to fight for hire; and those who paid the silver placed the Carians in the front rank, since they were to die for those who hired them. Hence the proverb.

Ἐν Καρὶ τὸν κίνδυνον
Explanation
ἐπὶ τῶν ἐν εὐτελέσι τὰς πείρας ποιουμένων. Κᾶρες γὰρ ἐμισθοφόρησαν πρῶτοι. Ἄλλοι τὴν παροιμίαν τιθέασι ἐπὶ τῶν εὐκαταφρονήτων· φασὶ γὰρ τοὺς Κᾶρας πρώτους ἀνθρώπων μισθοῦ στρατεύσασθαι· τοὺς οὖν τὸ ἀργύριον διδόντας προτάττειν τοὺς Κᾶρας ἑαυτῶν, ὡς μέλλοντας ἀποθνήσκειν ὑπὲρ τῶν μισθουμένων. Εἴρηται οὖν διὰ τοῦτο ἡ παροιμία.
