Explanation

they say Cyrus, having got the better of the Lydians, ordered them to play shopkeeper, to possess no weapons, and to wear long robes down to the feet; and so the Lydians, refashioned into a more womanish sort, became petty hucksters in the marketplace.

Explanation

φασὶ Κύρον περιγενόμενον τῶν Λυδῶν προςτάξαι αὐτοῖς καπηλεύειν, καὶ μὴ κεκτῆσθαι ὅπλον, ἀλλὰ ποδήρεις ἀμφιέννυσθαι χιτῶνας· καὶ οὕτως εἰς θῆλυ μᾶλλον μεταῤῥυθμισθέντας τοὺς Λυδοὺς ἀγοραίους γενέσθαι καπήλους.
