Drinking water by measure, but eating barley-cake unmeasured

Explanation

this verse passed into a proverb from a certain oracle which the god gave to the Sybarites; for being insolent and immoderate drinkers, they were destroyed by the Crotoniates. To those of them who escaped this oracle was given.

Μέτρῳ ὕδωρ πίνοντες, ἀμετρὶ δὲ μᾶζαν ἔδοντες

Explanation

οὗτος ὁ στίχος εἰς παροιμίαν περιέστη ἔκ τινος χρησμοῦ, ὃν ἀνεῖλεν ὁ θεὸς Συθαρίταις· ὑβρισταὶ γὰρ ὄντες καὶ ἀμετροπόται ἀπώλοντο ὑπὸ Κροτωνιατῶν. Τοῖς οὖν διαφυγοῦσιν αὐτῶν οὕτως ἐχρήσθη.
