May you not be praised even at a funeral feast

Explanation

said of the exceedingly wicked, not worthy even of common praise. For the ancients were wont to praise the deceased at the funeral feast, even if he had been a worthless fellow.

Οὐκ ἐπαινεθείης οὐδ’ ἐν περιδείπνῳ

Explanation

ἐπὶ τῶν σφόδρα πονηρῶν ἡ παροιμία λέγεται, καὶ μηδὲ τοῦ τυχόντος ἐπαίνου ἀξίων. Εἰώθεσαν γὰρ οἱ παλαιοὶ ἐν τοῖς περιδείπνοις τὸν τελευτήσαντα ἐπαινεῖν, καὶ εἰ φαῦλος ἦν.
