The story of Hylas is that he was carried off by the Nereids for his beauty. For some say Heracles was a fellow-voyager with Jason, with Hylas; and through Hylas' loss, Heracles, grieving, was left behind in Mysia. For there the Argonauts, putting in, sent Hylas, Heracles' beloved, to hunt; and he, snatched away by the Nereids on account of his beauty, called out. Polyphemus, hearing him cry, drew his sword and pursued, supposing he was being carried off by robbers, and reported it to Heracles. After Heracles had searched long for Hylas and did not return out of grief, since he could not find the one he sought, the ship put off; and Heracles returned to Argos.
