Proverb

Beyond the things of Callicrates

Explanation

Clearchus says there was a certain Callicrates in Carystus, exceedingly rich. If ever the Carystians marvelled at someone for excessive wealth, they would say, "Beyond the things of Callicrates." But Aristotle in the Athenian Constitution says that a certain Callicrates was first to raise the jurors' pay to excess; whence the proverb is said.
