The blood of Aesop

Illustrated proverb 1.47

English

Proverb

The blood of Aesop

Explanation

of those held fast by reproaches and ills hard to wash off; since the divine power was angry with the Delphians for unjustly killing Aesop, and on account of this they say the Pythia bade them propitiate the pollution incurred over Aesop. So beloved of the gods was Aesop that he is said in legend to have come back to life, like Tyndareus and Heracles and Glaucus.

Greek

Proverb

Explanation
