Explanation

this is a curse. For Heraclides says that, when the Thebans consulted the oracle about a war, the prophetess at Dodona answered that they would have victory if they committed sacrilege. One of the envoys snatched up Myrtila the prophetess and threw her into a cauldron of hot water that stood at hand. Others say that, when the Thebans were at war, the seer Bombus said they would conquer larger forces if they sacrificed one of their leaders beforehand; and they killed Bombus, and conquered.

Βοιωτοῖς μαντεύσαιο

Explanation

αὕτη καταρατική ἐστιν. Ἡρακλείδης γὰρ φησὶ, μαντευομένοις τοῖς Θηβαίοις περὶ πολέμου ἀπεκρίνατο ἡ προφῆτις ἡ ἐν Δωδώνῃ, νίκην αὐτοῖς ἀσεβήσασιν ἔσεσθαι. Εἷς δὲ τῶν θεωρῶν ἁρπάσας Μυρτίλαν τὴν προφῆτιν, ἐνέβαλεν εἰς θερμοῦ παρακείμενον λέβητα. Ἄλλοι δὲ φασὶν, ὅτι Θηβαίοις πολεμοῦσι Βόμβος μάντις πλείους ἔφη νικήσειν, εἰ προθύσαιεν τῶν ἡγεμόνων ἕνα. Οἱ δὲ ἀποκτείναντες τὸν Βόμβον ἐνίκησαν.
