of those who campaigned with Nicias to Sicily, some perished, others were taken captive and used to teach the Sicilian children their letters. Those who escaped to Athens, when asked about events in Sicily, would answer, "Either he has died, or he is teaching letters." And so the saying became proverbial. It is said of those who speak ambiguously.
