More foolish than Praxilla's Adonis
English
Proverb
More foolish than Praxilla's Adonis
Explanation
Praxilla of Sicyon was a lyric poetess, as Polemon says. This Praxilla, in her songs, brings on Adonis being asked by those below what was the most beautiful thing he left behind in coming, and he answers: "the sun and the moon, and cucumbers and apples." Hence the saying turned into a proverb. For it is foolish to compare cucumbers with the sun.
Greek
Proverb
Explanation
