Faster than Heracleitus of Perinthos runs the interest

Explanation

Heracleitus was a runner admired for his speed. The proverb is said of those who borrow money: that interest runs faster than Heracleitus the runner. It is given in Doric form, Hērakleitō Perinaiō, instead of Hērakleitou Perinaiou.

Explanation

Ἡράκλειτος δρομεὺς ἐγένετο θαυμασθεὶς ἐπὶ τάχει. Εἴρηται ἡ παροιμία ἐπὶ τῶν δανειζομένων, ὡς τοῦ τόκου θᾶττον τρέχοντος ἢ Ἡράκλειτος ὁ δρομεύς. Ἐξήλλακται μέντοι Δωρικῶς, Ἡρακλείτω Περιναίω, ἀντὶ τοῦ, Περιναίου.
