A Lerna of evils
English
Proverb
A Lerna of evils
Explanation
there is an Argolic proverb, which they used in averting evil. For they used to throw the refuse and offscourings into this place, since it was a mixed and motley crowd. But more accurately one might say the proverb passed down from a story. For Danaus is reported to have laid down there the heads of the sons of Aegyptus; and from that lawless deed the proverb is said. Perhaps too, in further outrage, Danaus ordered the purifications cast there. Or from the many-headed Hydra that lived there.

Explanation
