Explanation

of those understanding nothing the proverb was used: "A white line on a white stone." For on white stones, white lines can show nothing, as can a line drawn with red ochre. The line is the carpenter's measuring-cord.

Explanation

ἐπὶ τῶν μηδὲν συνιέντων ἡ παροιμία ἐλέγετο, Ἐν λευκῷ λίθῳ λευκὴ στάθμη. Ἐν γὰρ τοῖς λευκοῖς λίθοις λευκαὶ στάθμαι οὐδὲν δύνανται δεικνύναι, καθάπερ ἡ διὰ τῆς μίλτου. Στάθμη δὲ ἐστὶ σπάρτος τεκτονική.
