proverb of those performing rites with foul speech. From Heracles, who at Lindus snatched off a farmer's ox and feasted on it, while the farmer reviled him. Whence the Lindians, by oracle, sacrifice to Heracles thus, with reviling.

Λίνδιοι τὴν θυσίαν
Explanation
παροιμία ἐπὶ τῶν δυςφήμως ἱερουργούντων. Ἀπὸ Ἡρακλέους ἐν Λίνδῳ βοῦν ἀποσπάσαντος γεωργοῦ καὶ θοινησαμένου, τοῦ δὲ γεωργοῦ λοιδορουμένου αὐτόν. Ὅθεν καὶ Λίνδιοι κατὰ χρησμὸν οὕτω θύουσιν Ἡρακλεῖ λοιδορούμενοι.
