Explanation

among the Epizephyrian Locrians, they say, was Zaleucus the lawgiver, who laid down a law that there should be no written bonds for loans. Hence many denied their contracts, and the proverb gained currency for liars.

Λοκροὶ τὰς συνθήκας

Explanation

παρὰ Λοκροῖς τοῖς Ἐπιζεφυρίοις, ὥς φασιν, ἐγένετο Ζάλευκος νομοθέτης· ὃς νόμον ἔθηκε, συγγραφὴν ἐπὶ τῶν δανεισμάτων. μῆ γίνεσθαι. Ὅθεν πολλῶν ἀρνουμένων τὰ συναλλάγματα, ἐπὶ τῶν ψευδομένων ἡ παροιμία ἐκράτησεν.
