said of those distressed at some grievous matter. For there is a play Cyclops by the poet Philoxenus, in which Odysseus, being shut in the Cyclops' cave, says: "With what a monster has the god shut me up!"

Οἵῳ μ’ ὁ δαίμων τέρατι συγκαθεῖρξεν

Explanation

ἐπὶ τῶν δυςανασχετούντων ἐπί τινι δυςχερεῖ πράγματι λέγεται ἡ παροιμία. Κύκλωψ γάρ ἐστι δρᾶμα Φιλοξένου τοῦ ποιητοῦ, ἐν ᾧ ὁ Ὀδυσσεὺς περισχεθεὶς τῷ τοῦ Κύκλωπος σπηλαίῳ λέγει, Οἵῳ μ’ ὁ δαίμων τέρατι συγκαθεῖρξεν.
