Explanation
Aristophanes mentions it in his Cocalus. Said because the Colophonians were thought to work the finest gold. Herodotus too calls the best gold "Colophonian."

Χρυσὸς ὁ Κολοφώνιος
Explanation
μέμνηται ταύτης Ἀριστοφάνης ἐν Κωκάλῳ. Εἴρηται δὲ, παρόσον οἱ Κολοφώνιοι τὸν κάλλιστον χρυσὸν ἐργάζεσθαι νομίζονται. Καὶ Ἡρόδοτος δὲ Κολοφώνιον καλεῖ τὸν ἄριστον χρυσόν.
