Explanation

Menander mentions this in his first play. He says that in this land the eldest, struck through the breast with a javelin, perished. Hence among the Ionians and Aeolians arose the saying: "Thracians know no oaths."

Θρᾷκες ὅρκια οὐκ ἐπίστανται

Explanation

ταύτης μέμνηται Μένανδρος ἐν τῇ πρώτῃ· Λέγει γὰρ, ὅτι ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ γῇ ὁ πρεσβύτατος ἀκοντιφθεὶς διὰ τοῦ στήθους ἀπώλετο. Καὶ ἐντεῦθεν Ἴωσι καὶ Αἰολεῦσιν αἴνιγμα γέγονε, Θρᾷκες ὄρκια οὐκ ἐπίστανται.
