Explanation

the proverb is set down for those who readily share with no one. For it was customary among the ancients, when they sacrificed to Hestia, to share the sacrifice with no one. Theopompus mentions it in Ladies of the Tavern.

Ἰστίᾳ θύει

Explanation

ἡ παροιμία τέτακται ἐπὶ τῶν μηδενὶ ῥᾳδίως μεταδιδόντων. Δι’ ἔθους γὰρ ἦν τοῖς παλαιοῖς, ὁπότε ἔθυον Ἱστίᾳ, μηδενὶ μεταδιδόναι τῆς θυσίας. Μέμνηται ταύτης Θεόπομπος ἐν Καπηλίσιν.
